The Trina Turk dress is that perfect caramely neutral shade, it's made with soft and flattering fabric, and unlike the hot buttered rum, it's office-appropriate.
Hot Buttered Rum
Recipe adapted from Martha Stewart and Taste of Home
3 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 1/2 ounces dark rum
1 1/2 cups boiling water
2 tablespoons vanilla ice cream (optional)
1 tablespoon fresh orange juice (optional)
Beat butter, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon and nutmeg with a mixer on medium speed until combined, about 1 minute. Combine 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter mixture with 1 1/4 ounces of dark rum in 2 heatproof glasses. Based on your preference, add either 1 tablespoon of vanilla ice cream (for a richer, sweeter hot buttered rum) or 1/2 tablespoon of orange juice to each glass. Top each glass with boiling water, about 1/2 cup, and stir. Serves 2.

How cozy and delicious! I've never made hot buttered rum before, but this indeed would be grand for holing up in the winter...
ReplyDeleteA perfect combination!!! Lovely dress, lovely necklace and -the hot buttered rum looks very inviting!
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! I love that dress!
ReplyDeleteI love hot buttered rum this time of year but have never heard of putting ice cream in it, genius! Lovely photos as always.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun feature! Lovely dress, lovely drink!
ReplyDeleteIt is supposed to rain this weekend and I think this cocktail would be just about perfect. :) Buttered rum? Yes. And can we talk about your necklace? Love it.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty post! I've never tried hot buttered rum, mostly because I usually only like rum in a rum ball! I may have to give this a shot!
ReplyDeleteI haven't even seen a recipe for this either. The cups remind of of the ones we served drinks in when I worked at a tiny cafe in high school. Maybe HBR will be a good nostalgia drink? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing
This could be my favorite frocktail so far....
ReplyDeleteLooks yummy! I've hesitated to try a hot buttered rum after I saw an episode of Will & Grace where Grace tries one while waiting for a performance of The Nutcracker. She cringes after tasting it! If ice cream is on the scene, I may have to give your recipe a try!
ReplyDeletethe notion of a hot buttered rum always sounded a little icky to me--it makes me think of the time one of my friends knocked back a ramekin of butter at red lobster and nearly yakked. you make it sound tasty, though, and i love the idea of adding ice cream! nice post, nice blog. :)
ReplyDeleteGood morning from L.A.!
ReplyDeleteAhh! Natalie, my family has been making hot buttered rum (or HBR's as we like to call them) for decades. This is not an exaggeration. What I love about this recipe is that it is so similar to the one my mother has been using, her mother before her, and now myself and Madeline. The two differences are that we've never included orange zest, and we use an entire gallon of ice cream. Straight from the lips and right to the hips as we say! Ha! In any case, we omit the rum so the children can enjoy it, too.
Thank you for sharing your yummy drink as well as your pretty dress! It made me feel warm and cozy, as it made me remember many a fond memory that was shared over a piping hot cup of hot buttered rums!
Cheers!
Warmly,
Elizabeth
I tried to make hot buttered rum the other day and it did not come out right at all... I'll try your recipe next :)
