An Afternoon Treat at Alice's Tea Cup

I have long been a fan of Alice's Tea Cup. It was the site of many lady dates in college and is perhaps the girliest place in New York City. My husband comes along now because the man appreciates a good scone. There are three locations, but I usually go to the one on 64th Street. Sometimes the wait can be a while, but they do take down your cell phone number and call you when your table is ready. We walked around the block, perused Kiehl's and then it was teatime.

Everything is Alice in Wonderland-themed with bright colors, butterfly wings and mismatched teacups thrown in, the stuff little girls' birthday parties are made of. They have an extensive selection of teas and all sorts of sandwiches, salads and sweets on the menu, but I always get their deal of two scones and a pot of tea for $12. I don't think I've ever actually finished the two scones, but I like a little variety on my plate. Their flavors change each day with choices like mixed berry, mocha chocolate chip, buttermilk, and ham and cheese available, and all are served with the most delightful clotted cream and raspberry preserves. If they're serving pumpkin scones, I get one without question. They're rich with a hint of spice and a gooey caramel glaze on top. It's the sort of pick-me-up the Mad Hatter would approve of.

  3. I am so ashamed to say I've never taken myself out for tea! I totally need to check out Alice's Tea Cup (and I also want to try Tea & Sympathy). I could really go for a fresh scone with clotted cream right now.

  8. I think tea is such a great time of day. My parents are British so I was raised on a cup of tea and a slice of toast or a cookie (usually something simple like almond) my whole life. I love it. The first thing I did when I moved into my new apartment was buy a blue teapot. I'll have to try this tea place!

  10. Heaven! When I was little my mom and I had a standing date on THursdays after school at a little Victorian Tea House in town... We'd get a pot of watermelon black tea (that tasted like red Gobstoppers) and eat our fill of gingersnaps with lemon curd dollopped on top!

What a fun place, I need to come to NYC now!

Have you ever had bubble (sometimes called boba) tea? It's an asian drink... but so good!
